Surber Family Lifestyle Portraits | Winchester VA Photographer

Lifestyle sessions are definitely one of my favorites for portraits. I specialize in portraits, but there's so many different approaches to them. I've always identified myself as a natural photographer, but lifestyle takes it another step further. It's a style that has been around for decades but I feel as if it went dormant for a while and now it's alive again. What is lifestyle, you may ask? Long definition short, it's a photo-documentary. It's photographing someone in their element - whether it be at home, in their office/studio, at their job, or at their favorite hang out spot. At-home sessions are my favorite of the bunch. That's everyone's comfort zone! Fortunately, Lacy and Trey were kind enough to let me photograph their family in their comfort zone.

I can't express how excited I was to finally meet this family and photograph them. From our communication over the past few months, I felt like I knew them before I had even met them. They're so sweet and kind, so is their new little bundle of joy. This is their session. Enjoy! xo

Winchester VA Photographer | Sarah | "the looking glass"

Sarah has a beautiful soul. Primarily, I have known her as an artist over the years. She's the first person that I've met that loves fashion photography as much as I do, but also hates the industry. We both agree that the beauty in women should not be altered or modified to meet societies standards. A few years ago, I had the honor to be a part of her senior gallery exhibit focusing on said views. A few years later, I've asked her to be a part of mine and to be a part of something that focuses on how beautiful and inspiring woman can be - not who society wants them to be.

I was so ecstatic when she agreed to be a part of my project! She's so passionate about art and how it matters in the world. I always looked up to her when we were in school together. She was a role model to me through academia and as a person. I can't wait for you to hear her story, amongst the others. <3

and thank you Shelby for being an extremely photogenic pup. <3

Gretchen is a very caring person, a loyal friend, future wife, and fashionista. Talking to her was so much fun and such a fascinating experience. A lot of the women I have interviewed thus far have had one or two people in their life that have inspired them, but Gretchen finds everyone in her life to be an inspiration to her! The people that have supported her, helped her, have been there for her over the years have made her more open-minded in life, especially her fiance, Ryan.

This past year has not been easy on her, but what I saw before me was a woman that held her head high with her feet on the ground. Her late mother's words have pushed her through these past several months --her mother admired her bravery and how strong of a person she is. Being someone that has also lost their mother at a young age, I truly admire Gretchen's bravery and can easily see her mother's words carry on with her. She's a beautiful, inspiring, and strong woman. I'm so proud of her and so honored that she was willing to be a part of my book.

Portraits | Sarah

This past week, I photographed my friend, Sarah, for her acting portfolio and we had an amazing time. We've been friends for about seven years now and she has grown so much as a performer, actress, and singer/vocalist. Her determination to better herself and learn more as never ceased to amaze me. She has worked so hard throughout college and she deserves whatever great things the future holds for her. I just hopes she remembers me when she hits Broadway. ;)

These portraits were shot in Downtown Winchester - one of my favorite locations. There's so much that you can do with your surroundings in that area. I mean, there's a backdrop on every corner. Usually, I choose to shoot in a scenic, woodsy type of area because that's naturally beautiful. I also enjoy finding brick, stone walls, or just a colorful door. A stranger even let us use their back porch - although we were trying to be respectfully sneaky. Then again, Winchester (especially downtown), is very supportive of the arts.

These were simple portraits and headshots, but we had a lot of fun with them. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed each others company. If you have any questions about my portrait sessions or headshot sessions, feel free to contact me to inquire about my prices and packages! In the meantime, here are Sarah's portraits from our photoshoot. Enjoy!

Winchester VA Wedding Photographer | Lauren & Justin

There's no better day to photograph a wedding than a snowy day. Well, for some, maybe there are - like summer days or any day of the year that's dry and sunny. But the snow didn't stop us from doing this photoshoot. To see the full set and other wedding or engagements images, click the button below.

One may ask, why photograph a fake wedding? Well, for portfolio reasons mainly. But for this assignment, I had been asked for wedding-type images that didn't really show the couple's face. I looked through my archives of weddings and engagements and it was slim pickings for a faceless couple. Instead of feeling defeated, I decided to stage a wedding couple to satisfy my clients. Now, I knew that it has been snowy lately and that there would be snow on the ground but I had no idea that it was supposed to snow today.

My boyfriend and I traveled from Winchester to Hedgesville to pick up my faux bride and help her prepare for the shoot and she sent me a text that said, "Uhhhhh be careful in the snow". I look outside and it's completely dry and I said, "Ehhhhh. It'll be alright". Well, we go up I-81 N and once we cross the West Virginia line, it starts to flurry. Now, this is a dusty snow, so I figure it was going to be nothing. I was wrong. We get to Martinsburg and the roads are covered, slushy and the snow was coming down much harder - but I was determined to continue this venture.

My faux bride and groom are ready to go and we get in my (now magnificent) Kia Soul to go towards Poorhouse Farm. We had the idea to find a closer location, so we try the high school track. Big mistake. We get stuck. Like, we may not make it out of this, kind of stuck. Luckily, my boyfriend is great in bad situations and in the snow and he maneuvers the car in every direction and gets us out of the area and back onto a safer road. Thank you Kia for making my car's traction control and anti-lock brakes so wonderful - and thank you Matt for being a better driver than me. <3

Fast forwarding through many, "Are we there yet" questions, we reach our destination about an hour later than when we were supposed to start. We almost got attacked my beautiful geese and I, several times, almost fell for the snow's illusion that there was not a giant lake present and that I could just walk across to the destination I had in mind. But we made it! My friends were troopers. I bribed them with coffee cakes and extra towels for warmth. But all-in-all, i believe today was a success. I hope my client feels the same. :)

Youtube Channel

Hey everyone! I just started a video blog (vlog). I figured it might be a little bit more fun, personal, and easier to manage than writing out updates. There, I will be answering FAQ's, submitted questions, and just a little bit about myself. Feel free to check out my first video, Introduction, and start submitting any questions or video responses you may have.

Busy, Busy, Busy

I've completed 4 photoshoots since school has gotten out, which there could be more, but I also have a part-time job. However, next week, I will have 4 more photoshoots. I've begun offering free photo sessions for anyone that would like them; couples, seniors, families, etc. For the time being, I'm hoping to get more commerical clients and continue my fashion and conceptual photography on the side as well. Half and half, really. Fingers crossed! :)

Doll vs. Model Manipulation

June 7th!

Inspired by Richard Warren's series, Dollhouse, I will be using the same concept in my photographs to show a model portraying a doll that is too large for her environment. I have also seen series like this done by other photographers in my Color Digital Imagery class. I've always wanted to try it and I finally can. A friend of mine is more than willing to model for me and she is also a new model for me. We're pretty excited. I'll be experimenting with colored flood lights and use of space.
