Surber Family Lifestyle Portraits | Winchester VA Photographer

Lifestyle sessions are definitely one of my favorites for portraits. I specialize in portraits, but there's so many different approaches to them. I've always identified myself as a natural photographer, but lifestyle takes it another step further. It's a style that has been around for decades but I feel as if it went dormant for a while and now it's alive again. What is lifestyle, you may ask? Long definition short, it's a photo-documentary. It's photographing someone in their element - whether it be at home, in their office/studio, at their job, or at their favorite hang out spot. At-home sessions are my favorite of the bunch. That's everyone's comfort zone! Fortunately, Lacy and Trey were kind enough to let me photograph their family in their comfort zone.

I can't express how excited I was to finally meet this family and photograph them. From our communication over the past few months, I felt like I knew them before I had even met them. They're so sweet and kind, so is their new little bundle of joy. This is their session. Enjoy! xo

Winchester VA Photographer | Eileen | Headshots

I had the pleasure of photographing this lovely woman recently in the beautiful Shepherdstown, WV. She is taking a step into the world of theater and performance and asked me to take some headshots of her. I mean, how can anyone say 'no' to that? She is such a treat to work with and she has this beautiful energy about her. We tried about six different locations and her surroundings complimented her in every way, no matter where we were. It was a very sunny day and I was nervous that we would have issues with lighting. Ha! I was proved wrong.

She's a very talented individual. Eileen is a great writer and a brilliant romantic. I know that whatever she does, she will succeed at it. That's just in her nature. In this session, I didn't want to just take your typical, cliché headshots that you see on a playbill. I wanted to capture her romanticism so that her future employers will know who she is. I will say, I'm very proud of my final product and I can't wait to hear about all of her great accomplishments with it. <3

Thank you Shepherdstown Sweet Shop Bakery in Shepherdstown, WV for allowing us to invade your space for this photo session! :)

Winchester VA Photographer | What to Expect When You Hire Me

Winchester VA Photographer | What to Expect When You Hire Me

hello. this is me.

hello. this is me.

Have you worked with me before? Well, if you haven't and you're thinking of hiring me, I want to take the time to go over what to expect during and after our photo session.

There are two primary sources that I use for my portfolio and advertising, the website that you're currently on and Facebook. My website is the best source to view my work and where you can get a good sense of my style. On my website, you will find my most recent work, an excerpt about myself, my blog, and all of my prices and packages. This is a great start in your process when inquiring about hiring me. On Facebook, that's where I make all of my announcements and share all of my blog posts. This is where you can find all of my old work, but I do not post full galleries on there because my website gives better quality and capabilities.

Next is how to contact me! Under my tab "Investment", there's a contact form where you can fill out your inquiry, your name, and email. I will get in touch with you within 48 hours! My business number is also posted on the page and you may text or call me as well if that is something you prefer. When I get back in touch with you, I will offer a free consultation over coffee to meet with you! I believe that it is best to meet with each other in person so that we can get a sense of each other's personalities and get to know each other. This way, we will know if we're a good fit.

Great! Now that we've met or discussed your goals and mine, what is going to happen during our session? I like to make all photo sessions as stress free as possible. Each photo shoot has a unique experience! We may grab coffee beforehand because...well, coffee is absolutely wonderful. I may play some 90s classics during our session (gotta love the 90s). I'll tell jokes, share stories; it'll be just like spending time with a friend. This doesn't mean that I don't take my job seriously. The beautiful part about being a photographer is that your job is challenging and serious work, but it's also a lot of fun. Doing these things are not a distraction to me but it helps both of us get into the groove of things and create natural shots. There will be some business formalities that will take place to finalize our session, but 98% of the session with be fun.
I promise. :)

For portrait sessions, all final products will be delivered to you within two weeks. For weddings, all final products will delivered to you within 30 days. I don't like to rush through the editing process. Every session is very important to me and I devote all of my time to your session before taking on another job. During this time, I edit your images, review them, add finishing touches, create personalized gifts, print in-house, cut them down to size by hand, prepare all final documents, then gather all materials to ship them to you! It's a lot of work and I love every minute of it. Seeing your final product is equally as exciting for both of us!

I love seeing my work completed, knowing I did all of it by hand with a personal touch. I love the anticipation of your final product getting to you and hearing of your reaction. This isn't a hobby for me and it's not just a job. This is my life and my passion. I take it very seriously and professionally, all while enjoying every moment. I hope this gave you a good idea of what to expect when you hire me. I truly hope to work with any of you in the future!

Winchester VA Photographer | Hannah | Senior Portraits

Graduate: Hannah Coffey
Photo Shoot Location: The Woods Resort in Hedgesville, WV
Graduation Date: 05.27.15

This little chickadee has blossomed into quite the young woman. I grew up with her older sister as best friends and I quickly merged into their wonderful family - that was twelve years ago. Now, here she is, graduating from high school and moving on to go to WVU to study psychology. It blows my mind how quickly time passes. She's had quite the year and nothing is slowing her down. Needless to say, I'm very proud of her and wish her all the best. I know her family is just as proud as I am and are excited to see her through the next part of her journey in life.

Congratulations Hannah!!

Lady In Red | Fashion Photography

Location: Shepherdstown, WV

Last week, I photographed this lovely and talented woman to capture the essence of "The Lady in Red". You may have just played "Lady in Red" by Chris De Burgh in your head, but that's kind of what I was going for. Typically, the concept is captured by an older, very mature, sultry type of woman. I was going for the modern day woman. The woman that you would see casually walking down the street. The woman that catches your eye and you're dying to know her name - know her story. There's a mystery behind her and she stands out like a red rose. She surrounds herself with natural beauty hoping to hide and muddle herself, but no matter what she does - she'll always stand out. This is a conceptual fashion series with a story behind it. This is where my passion originally stems from in photography - fashion photography. I'm a writer and I love to read. I come up with stories and I have a vision for them. The beautiful thing about being a photographer is that I have the opportunity to capture my vision and see it on screen or on paper. Whether it's a manufactured story and documenting a true story, I feel that it's important for stories to be told.

Beauty is a very well-known topic amongst our society. It's not a new concept but I think it's being shed in a negative light now more than ever. Beauty standards have always been specific based on the culture that you're a part of. In Greece, beauty was seen in a goddess like way through a curvy figure and long, wavy hair. In France, beauty was plastered with pounds of pale makeup and wigs up to the sky accompanied by luxurious costumes. In Spain, the more color you had in your wardrobe, the better. In America, we're struggling with what beautiful is and what is expected. The media photoshops images to portray their vision of beauty which is a scarless, blemish-free, tight yet curvaceous body and flawless hair. In reality, very few of us look like that. Shana (above) was not photoshopped. Her body was not altered. No blemishes were removed. I let the light, nature, the dress, and her attitude do all the talking. Beauty can be captured without being altered. This is what I hope to bring to the fashion photography industry - Natural Beauty. I love fashion photography for the stories that are told. When I look through magazines, I gawk at how beautiful the lighting is or decipher what they were trying to portray. I don't give two sh**s about how flawless his/her skin is or how manicured their body is. Show me a real model with real features that shows me that they feel beautiful about themselves just the way they are. That's what people want to see - the truth. People obsess over their body image because we're expected to look the way the fashion industry wants their models to look or the TV industry wants their actors to look. Women and men look down on themselves, even become depressed because of the way they feel about themselves based on these chimerical standards. It's disgusting and we're going to change that. I hope you enjoyed this series and please share it with your friends and family to shed more light on natural beauty.

Nothing is beautiful, only man: on this piece of naivete rests all aesthetics, it is the first truth of aesthetics. Let us immediately add its second: nothing is ugly but degenerate man - the domain of aesthetic judgment is therewith defined.

It was my privilege and honor to photograph this bundle of joy. She had so much fun during our session and I can't wait to photograph her more in the future! We played with bubbles, sticks, and a little chalk - not to mention a little confetti! Bristol is three years old and will be four this year. She loves her mother to pieces and it really showed. They ran around, giggled, had tickle fights, and many hugs were given. I was a mother's girl myself growing up, so I always love watching a relationship grow between a mother and daughter. It's one of the most important relationships in life, so cherish it as long as you can! Here are some images from our little session!

Thank you for taking the time to view my blog!
