Winchester VA Photographer | Gretchen | the looking glass.

Gretchen is a very caring person, a loyal friend, future wife, and fashionista. Talking to her was so much fun and such a fascinating experience. A lot of the women I have interviewed thus far have had one or two people in their life that have inspired them, but Gretchen finds everyone in her life to be an inspiration to her! The people that have supported her, helped her, have been there for her over the years have made her more open-minded in life, especially her fiance, Ryan.

This past year has not been easy on her, but what I saw before me was a woman that held her head high with her feet on the ground. Her late mother's words have pushed her through these past several months --her mother admired her bravery and how strong of a person she is. Being someone that has also lost their mother at a young age, I truly admire Gretchen's bravery and can easily see her mother's words carry on with her. She's a beautiful, inspiring, and strong woman. I'm so proud of her and so honored that she was willing to be a part of my book.

Winchester VA Photographer | Molly | Mini Session

Hello again, friends. As you may have been following, this is continuation of the updates I promised for photo book that I'm working on. Now, I won't post from every session that I have with these fabulous ladies, but I will post as much as humanly possible. If you don't know what I'm talking about, my previous blog post talks about it. Keep a look out because once I've chosen my final book cover, I will post the details of the book, information about how to order one when it's completed, and about my solo exhibition soon to come this September!

Once again, in the meantime, please enjoy this mini session with this wonderful and beautiful woman, Molly! I have known her since grade school and she's blossomed into quite an inspiring person.

Last week, I photographed this lovely and talented woman to capture the essence of "The Lady in Red". You may have just played "Lady in Red" by Chris De Burgh in your head, but that's kind of what I was going for. Typically, the concept is captured by an older, very mature, sultry type of woman. I was going for the modern day woman. The woman that you would see casually walking down the street. The woman that catches your eye and you're dying to know her name - know her story. There's a mystery behind her and she stands out like a red rose. She surrounds herself with natural beauty hoping to hide and muddle herself, but no matter what she does - she'll always stand out. This is a conceptual fashion series with a story behind it. This is where my passion originally stems from in photography - fashion photography. I'm a writer and I love to read. I come up with stories and I have a vision for them. The beautiful thing about being a photographer is that I have the opportunity to capture my vision and see it on screen or on paper. Whether it's a manufactured story and documenting a true story, I feel that it's important for stories to be told.

Beauty is a very well-known topic amongst our society. It's not a new concept but I think it's being shed in a negative light now more than ever. Beauty standards have always been specific based on the culture that you're a part of. In Greece, beauty was seen in a goddess like way through a curvy figure and long, wavy hair. In France, beauty was plastered with pounds of pale makeup and wigs up to the sky accompanied by luxurious costumes. In Spain, the more color you had in your wardrobe, the better. In America, we're struggling with what beautiful is and what is expected. The media photoshops images to portray their vision of beauty which is a scarless, blemish-free, tight yet curvaceous body and flawless hair. In reality, very few of us look like that. Shana (above) was not photoshopped. Her body was not altered. No blemishes were removed. I let the light, nature, the dress, and her attitude do all the talking. Beauty can be captured without being altered. This is what I hope to bring to the fashion photography industry - Natural Beauty. I love fashion photography for the stories that are told. When I look through magazines, I gawk at how beautiful the lighting is or decipher what they were trying to portray. I don't give two sh**s about how flawless his/her skin is or how manicured their body is. Show me a real model with real features that shows me that they feel beautiful about themselves just the way they are. That's what people want to see - the truth. People obsess over their body image because we're expected to look the way the fashion industry wants their models to look or the TV industry wants their actors to look. Women and men look down on themselves, even become depressed because of the way they feel about themselves based on these chimerical standards. It's disgusting and we're going to change that. I hope you enjoyed this series and please share it with your friends and family to shed more light on natural beauty.

Nothing is beautiful, only man: on this piece of naivete rests all aesthetics, it is the first truth of aesthetics. Let us immediately add its second: nothing is ugly but degenerate man - the domain of aesthetic judgment is therewith defined.

Portraits | Sarah

This past week, I photographed my friend, Sarah, for her acting portfolio and we had an amazing time. We've been friends for about seven years now and she has grown so much as a performer, actress, and singer/vocalist. Her determination to better herself and learn more as never ceased to amaze me. She has worked so hard throughout college and she deserves whatever great things the future holds for her. I just hopes she remembers me when she hits Broadway. ;)

These portraits were shot in Downtown Winchester - one of my favorite locations. There's so much that you can do with your surroundings in that area. I mean, there's a backdrop on every corner. Usually, I choose to shoot in a scenic, woodsy type of area because that's naturally beautiful. I also enjoy finding brick, stone walls, or just a colorful door. A stranger even let us use their back porch - although we were trying to be respectfully sneaky. Then again, Winchester (especially downtown), is very supportive of the arts.

These were simple portraits and headshots, but we had a lot of fun with them. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed each others company. If you have any questions about my portrait sessions or headshot sessions, feel free to contact me to inquire about my prices and packages! In the meantime, here are Sarah's portraits from our photoshoot. Enjoy!

Busy, Busy, Busy

I've completed 4 photoshoots since school has gotten out, which there could be more, but I also have a part-time job. However, next week, I will have 4 more photoshoots. I've begun offering free photo sessions for anyone that would like them; couples, seniors, families, etc. For the time being, I'm hoping to get more commerical clients and continue my fashion and conceptual photography on the side as well. Half and half, really. Fingers crossed! :)
